EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a comprehensive psychological therapy designed to help reduce distressing, unhelpful thought patterns while strengthening more positive and adaptive ways of thinking and feeling.
It is a highly effective, evidence-based therapy commonly used with survivors of trauma (both emotional and physical), survivors of sexual abuse, and individuals experiencing persistent memories that continue to influence present-day emotions and behaviours.
From the client’s perspective, EMDR can feel like a relatively simple and structured process. It is often a more rapid form of therapy, and many people do not require long-term treatment over many months.
While everyone’s needs are different, many clients experience significant improvement within approximately five sessions, depending on their individual circumstances and presenting issues.
EMDR supports the brain’s natural ability to process and heal from distressing experiences, helping to reduce the intensity and lasting impact of traumatic memories.
Although it may sound modern, EMDR is a well-established therapy. It was first scientifically researched in 1988 by psychologist Francine Shapiro and has since built a strong evidence base. Since 2004, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended EMDR as an effective treatment for trauma-related difficulties.
EMDR is suitable for both adults and children. Each course of therapy is individually tailored to your needs, goals, and pace. A thorough history-taking process ensures EMDR is used safely and effectively, in a way that feels right for you.
Sessions typically last around one hour. For children, or those who tire more easily, sessions may be shorter. EMDR can also be combined with other therapeutic approaches, which will always be discussed and agreed upon before treatment begins.
If you would like to learn more about EMDR therapy or explore whether it may be helpful for you, you’re welcome to book a free, no-obligation initial consultation.
These consultations last approximately 20 minutes and can take place by phone or via an online video call. They provide an opportunity to discuss different therapy options and see whether I’m the right therapist to support you.
Please feel free to contact Rebecca, an EMDR practitioner, for an informal and confidential chat about how EMDR therapy may benefit you.
